If the door lifts easily by hand after pulling the release cord, the problem is inside the opener, usually a stripped plastic drive gear. That is an inexpensive, very common repair. If the door is heavy to lift by hand, the opener is fine and you have a broken spring, in which case running the opener again risks damaging it.
Is it worth repairing an old garage door opener?
It depends on the part and the age. Sensors, gear kits, remotes and limit switches are cheap and worth fixing at almost any age. A failed logic board on a unit over fifteen years old usually is not, because the replacement board costs a large fraction of a new, quieter, safer opener. We give you both numbers.
Why do my garage door remotes keep losing their programming?
Intermittent loss is usually a weak logic board or a failing antenna wire rather than the remotes. If only one remote misbehaves, start with the battery. If all of them drop out together, and especially if the range has been shrinking, the receiver in the opener head is the likely culprit.
Is a garage door spring something I can replace myself?
No, and this is the one job we ask people not to attempt. Torsion springs are wound under enough tension to break bones or worse if they release unexpectedly, and the winding bars are not interchangeable with screwdrivers or rebar. It is a genuinely dangerous repair and it is priced modestly for that reason.
My garage door closes then immediately opens again. Why?
That is the safety reversal doing its job. Either the photo-eye sensors are misaligned or obstructed, or the close-force setting on the opener is too sensitive, or something in the track is physically stopping the door. Check the sensors first: both lights should be steady, not blinking. If they look fine, it is usually a force adjustment.
