How do I know if my garage door spring is broken?

The clearest sign is a loud bang from the garage, often overnight, followed by a door that is suddenly far too heavy to lift by hand. Look at the torsion spring on the bar above the door: a broken one has a visible two to three inch gap. The opener may also hum and strain without moving the door, or move it a few inches then stop.

Should both springs be replaced if only one broke?

Yes, on a two-spring door. They are installed at the same time and wear at the same rate, so the surviving spring is typically within weeks or months of failing too. Replacing the pair costs far less than paying a second callout, and a mismatched pair puts the door out of balance.

How long do garage door springs last?

Springs are rated in cycles, one cycle being one open and one close. A standard 10,000-cycle spring lasts roughly seven years on a door used four times a day. High-cycle springs rated at 20,000 or more cost modestly more and can double that lifespan, which is usually worth it on a door that is the main entrance to the house.
