Emergency garage door repair: what counts, and what happens when you call
Updated 2026-04-08 EmergencySafety
"24 hour service" is on every garage door website in Michigan and it means different things at different companies. Here is what it means at ours, and how to tell whether your situation actually warrants the callout.
These are emergencies
- The door is stuck open and the house is insecure. Particularly overnight, and particularly if the garage connects to the house.
- A car is trapped and you need it. Work, childcare, a medical appointment.
- A cable snapped and the door is hanging at an angle. Unstable and capable of dropping.
- The door came off its track. See our guide on what to do when a garage door comes off track.
- Impact or storm damage. Bent track, torn sections, water getting in.
- A commercial door that has stopped the business. Dock doors, fleet bays, shop shutters.
These can safely wait for a normal appointment
- The door is noisy but working.
- One remote stopped working while the wall button still does.
- The door is closed and secure, and you have another way in and out.
- A cosmetic dent.
We will tell you on the phone if your situation is in this second group, because a scheduled slot costs you less than an after-hours callout and we would rather keep the customer than win the invoice.
What to do before we arrive
If the door is stuck open
Do not leave valuables visible. If the door will not come down at all, you can sometimes clamp locking pliers onto the vertical track just above a roller on each side to hold the door where it is, then cover the opening. Never stand under a door held only by a damaged cable or spring.
If the door is stuck closed with a car inside
Pull the red release cord to disconnect the opener and try lifting by hand. If it is very heavy, stop immediately: that is a broken spring, and forcing it risks the door dropping. Wait for the technician.
If a cable has snapped
Leave the door completely alone. There may be stored spring energy that releases unpredictably when the door is moved.
What happens when you call
- A person answers. Any hour, every day of the year.
- We diagnose over the phone. Describing the sound and what the door is doing is usually enough for us to name the failed part and give a price range before anyone drives out.
- You get a real arrival window. Not "sometime tonight."
- The after-hours rate is stated upfront. Before you agree to anything.
- The technician arrives stocked. Standard springs, cables, rollers, sensors and gear kits are on the van, so most emergency calls are resolved on the first visit.
On after-hours pricing
Emergency work at 2am costs more than a Tuesday morning slot, and anyone who tells you otherwise is recovering it somewhere else on the invoice. What we will not do is quote a rate on the phone and present a different number on the driveway. The figure you agree to is the figure you pay.
If we can talk you through it, we will
A meaningful share of the emergency calls we take are solved on the phone: a sensor knocked out of alignment, a lock partially engaged, a wall console in vacation mode, ice bonding the seal to the slab. We do not charge for that conversation. If it turns out you did not need us, that is a good outcome.
