What garage door repair actually costs in Michigan

Updated 2026-02-26  PricingBuying advice

Nobody publishes garage door prices, which is exactly why people dread the call. Here is a plain account of what drives the cost, so you can judge whether a quote you have been given is sensible.

What moves the price

  • Single versus double door. A double door weighs roughly twice as much, needs heavier springs and takes longer to balance.
  • Parts on the van versus ordered. Standard residential parts are stocked. Oversized, high-cycle or commercial parts are not, which adds a visit.
  • Access. Low headroom, side-mount torsion systems and finished ceilings all add labour.
  • Hour of day. An emergency callout at 2am costs more than a Tuesday morning slot. If a job can safely wait, waiting is cheaper.
  • Door age. Obsolete hardware sometimes means adapting or replacing more than the failed part.

Springs: why "just replace the broken one" costs more

On a two-spring door, both were fitted on the same day and have taken the same number of cycles. Replacing only the failed one means the survivor typically goes within months, and you pay a second callout on top. A mismatched pair also leaves the door out of balance, which then wears the opener. Replacing the pair is the cheaper decision over any sensible time frame.

When repair stops making sense

A reasonable rule: if the repair quote approaches half the cost of a comparable new door, and the existing door is over fifteen years old or single-skin builder grade, put the money toward replacement instead. A good technician will give you both numbers unprompted. One who only ever quotes replacement is worth a second opinion.

New doors: what you are paying for

  • Steel gauge. Lower numbers are thicker. 24-gauge resists dents considerably better than 27-gauge.
  • Insulation. Polystyrene is cheaper; polyurethane is foamed in place, bonds the skins together and gives a higher R-value and a stiffer, quieter door.
  • Construction. Single-skin, two-layer and three-layer sandwich doors, in ascending order of price, quietness and durability.
  • Windows and hardware. Almost entirely cosmetic, and one of the larger cost swings on a quote.

Questions worth asking any quote

  1. Is this a flat price or an hourly rate that can grow?
  2. Does it include removal and disposal of the old door or parts?
  3. Are you replacing springs as a pair?
  4. What cycle rating are the springs you are fitting?
  5. What is covered afterward, and for how long?
