My garage door won't open. What should I check before calling?
Pull the red release cord and try lifting the door by hand. If it is extremely heavy or won't budge, you have a broken spring and should stop there. If it lifts easily, the fault is in the opener: check the photo-eye sensors near the floor for a blinking light, obstruction or misalignment, and confirm the opener still has power. Is a garage door spring something I can replace myself?
No, and this is the one job we ask people not to attempt. Torsion springs are wound under enough tension to break bones or worse if they release unexpectedly, and the winding bars are not interchangeable with screwdrivers or rebar.
